One exciting part of my new job as the Political/Military Officer for the US Embassy in Mauritius is to work with the US Government and the Mauritius and Seychelles governments to arrange visits of US Navy ships. Our military is very committed to providing a positive international presence in the Indian Ocean, and to work with host country navies and coast guards to advance levels of training and readiness to take on the challenges of maritime security. Yesterday was the culmination of some of our work, with the arrival of the US Navy frigate Samuel B. Roberts in the Port Louis harbor. The ship and its crew are here for one week, working with the Mauritius Coast Guard to conduct training on maritime security in the Indian Ocean . . . translation: fighting pirates. We were proud to welcome America's finest to these shores. Not only are these young sailors conducting all important training in port, but they did a community service project this morning painting the walls of a school for special needs children, then having lunch with the students and spending play time with them. It simply makes your heart burst with pride to see America's young military personnel being such marvelous ambassadors to the world.
