Walking through the jetway at the Mauritius airport is an overhead sign saying "Welcome to Paradise". Pretty much sums up this new place. Shelly and I have been welcomed with open arms to our new home. Here are a couple pictures from the coast very close to our house. The one on the right is part of our back yard; the infinity pool in the foreground and the Indian Ocean beyond. We arrived on an overnight flight from Paris last Friday. We were met at the airport by our sponsor and some Embassy staff members. They helped us with luggage and making sure that our dog Bailey had arrived safely. Then we were whisked off to our new home on the coast. Not only is it drop dead gorgeous, but our sponsor family had stocked the fridge with fresh foods and beverages! The weekend was spent on trips to the central city market, a welcome to Mauritius dinner at a coastal restaurant, and unpacking. Bailey is unfortunately undergoing a 30 day mandatory quarantine at the National Veterinary Center; we are allowed to visit him for 20 minutes a day. That's been the toughest part of our adjustment. Bright and early Monday morning, I started work at the Embassy. It has been a whirlwind of meetings, reading, and getting to know my Mauritian and American counterparts. Am learning Mauritian Creole, and having lots of fun with it. I'm finding I have a very interesting portfolio, with lots of direct involvement in international things going on in the Indian Ocean, including maritime security/counter-piracy. Shelly's been busy turning a house into a home. We are safe, healthy, and delighted to be started on our Mauritius tour. We do not yet have internet at the house, but we expect to have it by next week. Then, we'll be able to update our blog more frequently.
